Taking Advantage of the Outdoors During COVID-19

Apr. 10 2020 Miscellaneous By Noah Germaine

With many shelter in place and stay home orders continually rolling out across the nation, many people are wondering about spending time outside during the COVID-19 pandemic and Social Distancing. And spending time outside is one of the best ways to

Maintaining Social Distance

The recommendations for social distancing mean keeping at least six feet away from people who don’t live in your home, avoiding going into restaurants or visiting nursing homes, and staying home from public places unless absolutely necessary. So how does this factor into being outside?

Most protective orders in place right now across the country actually encourage individuals to spend time outside to help maintain a sense of normalcy, while also improving mental health during these stressful and uncertain times.

How the Outdoors Help

Being in the sun and enjoying the fresh air outside is proven to have numerous benefits for our overall health and well-being, especially in times of stress or illness.

Overall, being outside in the sun helps us in a variety of ways, including:

  • Elevating your mood

  • Strengthening the immune system

  • Lowering blood pressure

As for fresh air, it helps by:

  • Clearing your lungs

  • Boosting energy levels

  • Sharpening the mind

The benefits of sunlight and fresh air have long been used in the medical world, including during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918. Doctors would utilize open-air therapy by giving patients “as much fresh air as possible by putting them in tents. And in good weather, they were taken out of their tents and put in the sun.” Needless to say, fresh air and sunlight are allowed, and necessary, during our current global crisis.

One of the best ways to get air and sun while maintaining social distancing? Boating!

Boating Safely While Social Distancing

Your boat can become a safe haven for you and those living in your household during this time where many places have closed their doors to help protect communities as a whole. When you need a safe place to go because you can’t stand to be in your house a minute longer, take the boat out to get some fresh air and sunshine.

The Sea Tow Foundation for Boating Safety and Education has created the following recommendations to help you enjoy your boat during this pandemic:

  • Only go boating with those you live with — not friends or extended family

  • Stay at least six feet away from other boats and boaters

  • Keep all required boating safety equipment on-board

  • Pack your own food

  • Fuel up before you go

  • Thoroughly clean your boat when you get back

Overall, you can enjoy your boat and be outside as long as you do it responsibly. Plan ahead to keep you and your family safe while spending the day on the water.
